How many reminders must a business send, and when?

Before a trial converts, before a 12-month-plus renewal, and at least every six months on rolling plans. The exact timing is set by the business and must be stated up front.

The Act requires reminder notices before a renewal payment that follows the end of a free or discounted introductory period, before a renewal that commits the consumer to 12 months or more, and at the end of each six-month period for contracts that keep rolling on. For a monthly plan that means a reminder roughly every six months; for an annual plan, reminders before each renewal, with two being the pattern most lawyers describe.

Earlier versions of the Bill fixed windows of a few days before renewal, but those were removed in 2023. Instead the business chooses a reasonable period, must state it in the key pre-contract information, and must then stick to it. A business that promises a reminder 10 days before renewal and sends it 2 days before is in breach.

Reminders must be in writing on a durable medium, such as email, with their purpose immediately apparent, and must state the renewal date, the amount and how to cancel.
